The Hirayama Remodel demonstrates a design approach that fuses new and old ideas for renovating a period house. Rather than strictly adhering to the original design vocabulary, we selected new forms, materials, and fixtures for their relationship and juxtaposition to the house’s original materials. A Japanese homeowner directed us to re-design her 1910 Craftsman style home’s interior to fit her particular needs and culture without compromising the spirit of the original design. The work scope included a new “in-law” unit with a separate kitchen and bathroom, a new master bathroom, and new finish materials, lighting, and furnishings for the living room, dining room, breakfast nook, and entrance hall.
