The project’s design requirements included a new front entrance, enlarging the den and dining room, providing separation for the dining room/ kitchen relationship, and establishing a visual connection between the kitchen and den. Master bedroom suite improvements and a new study were required at the second floor. The original 1938 construction was a one-story structure with a staircase to an attic space (commonly called a story and a half). Over the years a dormer addition and other attic improvements yielded more habitable space, but the constrained ceiling heights led the owner to seek a design for integrating a full second story with the cottage feeling of the main level. Our design draws inspiration from the home’s Colonial Heights neighboring residences to provide a “good fit” for the neighborhood while fulfilling the client desires for the interior. The second-floor covered porch affords additional living space and contact with the surrounds of the house’s public side. Special attention was paid to maintaining proportionally appropriate new roof heights in developing a second-floor design to integrate existing and new elements.
